Arrival Day at Chamonix

Meet in Chamonix, at the foot of Mont Blanc, for a gear check and full route briefing before the week ahead.

Overnight and dinner in Chamonix.

Day 1: Chamonix to Les Contamines

The tour sets off from Les Houches and climbs over the Col de Tricot, with the Bionnassay glacier close overhead, before descending into the village of Les Contamines. Lunch will be at the wonderful Chalet de Miage for a delicious home cooked meal.

Hike: 14 km · +639 m / −1,200 m
Overnight and dinner in Les Contamines.

Day 2: Les Contamines to Les Chapieux

A long climbing day over the Col du Bonhomme, one of the trip’s five major passes, with sweeping views back over the valley before the descent to the small hamlet of Les Chapieux.

Hike: 15 km · +1,270 m / −906 m
Overnight and dinner in Les Chapieux or Bourg Saint Maurice

Day 3: Les Contamines tou Courmayeur

Over the Col de la Seigne, the high, wide-open pass that marks the border with Italy — and one of the finest single viewpoints on the entire route, with Mont Blanc’s Italian face filling the horizon. The trail then drops through the Val Veny to Courmayeur, Italy’s answer to Chamonix, tucked beneath the mountain’s south side.

Hike: 15 km · +734 m / −741 m
Overnight and dinner in Courmayeur.

Day 4: Rest day or hiking day Val Veny

A full day to recover, explore the town, or simply enjoy an Italian espresso with a view of the massif you’ve just walked around a third of. Optional hiking to Val Veny or a cable car ride up to the Top to Italy with the Skyway cable car.

Overnight in Courmayeur, dinner on your own

Day 5: Courmayeur to Val Ferret

The longest day of the tour, climbing steadily up the Val Ferret with the Grandes Jorasses and the Italian side of the massif in near-constant view.

Hike: 18 km · +1,080 m / −522 m
Overnight and dinner at the Val Ferret

Day 6: Val Ferret to La Fouly or Champex Lac

Over the Grand Col Ferret, the trip’s second international border crossing, leaving Italy for Switzerland. La Fouly, the first Swiss village on the route, sits in a quiet, glacier-carved valley.

Hike: 14 km · +760 m / −746 m
Overnight and dinner in La Fouly or Champex Lac

Day 7: Champex Lac to Col de Forclaz

We walk along the Bovine trail up to the Bovinette alpage where you can stop for a delicious apple pie or a home made soup. Enjoy stunning views down to the Roman town of Martigny and the Rhone valley as you walk to Col de Forclaz.

Short transfer into France for the night in the Mont Blanc valley at Argentière.

Hike: 14 km · +750 m / −705 m
Overnight in Argentière, dinner on your own

Day 8: Col de Balme

A final high crossing at the Col de Balme, on the France–Switzerland border, with the whole Chamonix valley and Mont Blanc opening up ahead — one of the great closing views of the tour.

Hike: 13 km · +1,100 m / −500 m
Overnight and celebration dinner in Argentière

Day 9: Chamonix Mountain lakes

The final leg, crossing into the Aiguilles Rouges Nature Reserve and past Lac de Chesery before the descent back into Chamonix — closing the loop where the week began.
